BYTE magazine. PC-WRITE has all the bells and whistles you'd expect of a topnotch professional program: automatic wordwrap, on screen formatting, nine (count 'em, nine) help screens, right justification, overwrite or insertion, underlining, boldface, double width, flexible margins, split screen capabilities, user definable keyboards, allows for recording and playback of keyboard sequences, block moves, and more! PC-WRITE was ranked the 9th best word processing program by readers of PC World in October 1985. Compatible with almost all MS-DOS computers, including PC jr. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 53 EASYRITE/LABLFILE -- EASYRITE is a word-processor that rivals WORDY in its simplicity, although its approach is entirely different. EASYRITE is a "line oriented" word processor. That means you work on only one line at a time. Changes to the line you are on are made immediately. Once you press return you have accepted the line. To edit again, you must redo the entire line. Many people find this approach intuitively correct. Entirely menu-driven. Maximum length of document is 200 lines. LABLFILE is the ultimate label maker. Features: two label sizes, four print styles, menu-driven, add records, edit records, load file, save file, review records, multiple copies, and more. It even displays elapsed time. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 3 WORDY/PRINT SETUP -- WORDY is one of the simplest word processing programs you'll ever find. It can't do one quarter of the tricks that PC-Write can. However, it is perfect for writing a simple letter or a school report. Documentation is short but adequate. Functions include file creation, saving to and loading from disk, and edit and print current file. PRINT SETUP is a simple program which sets your printer to take advantage of expanded print, compressed, etc. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-64 TURBO SPELL Version 1.1 --TURBO SPELL is a user supported spelling checker that was released in November, 1985. When TURBO SPELL finds a word it doesn't recognize, it highlights the word and gives you four choices: 1. Word is spelled correctly, continue checking 2. Word is spelled correctly, remember it, and continue 3. Word is spelled incorrectly, indicate correct spelling 4. Quit checking this file. Works on almost all word processing systems. The main dictionary can be easily added to at any time. TURBO SPELL requires 192K or more RAM plus PC or MS-DOS version 2.0 or later. Supports either color graphics or monochrome. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 4 FX-SETUP -- If you do much work with your dot matrix printer, you need FX-SETUP. Just boot the program and you can instantly tell your printer to do anything you want it to do: pica or elite print, proportional printing, double strike, emphasized type, enlarged, condensed, superscript, subscript, skip perf, different language sets, and more. You can even create your own character set. Or use a language font already created. FX-SETUP can easily be customized for any printer. It's already set up for any Epson printers. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 5 SPOOLER -- This print spooler is the simplest to use we have ever seen. Just type "SP" to install. From then on, whenever you want to print something, just follow your normal procedures. SP will automatically store the information in a special buffer (16K to 64K in size). Then the printer can take its time printing and you can go back to computing. You'll wonder how you lived without it. Also included are three other print spooler programs: MSPOOL1, SPOOLER1, AND SPOOLER2. These programs are professional in their feel (but also a little more complicated to use). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 6 POSTER/BANNER -- Share the fun of your computer with others using these two basic programs. You enter your message and POSTER prints it out as a poster using large letters. These large letters are made up of little letters. You can specify a message for these little letters if you wish. For example, the poster might read "HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANN" in big letters. These big letters could be made of little letters which said "LOVE" or "KISSME" or "BADBREATH". BANNER is a program which prints out huge block letters sideways on continuous paper. You can choose from seven different sizes. Big letters are printed from little letters of your choosing. Easy to use. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-63 PC-DESK -- Would you believe the first Freeware integrated program? It's PC-DESK. Integrated functions include: Calendar/Reminder, Address File, Word Processor, Automatic Letter Writer with Mail Merge, Calculator, Automatic Phone Dialer, On-Screen Clock, and Telephone Directory. Prints: mailing labels, envelopes, letters, memos, repetitive labels, and Rolodex cards. Entirely menu-driven with no commands to memorize. Brand spanking new. PC-DESKMATES is here! This RAM resident program (uses 64K) is always available at the touch of a key. Nine desktop tools: alarm clock, calculator, phone book, appointment calendar, DOS commands, phone dialer, notepad, printer controls, and typewriter. Requires 128K and PC DOS 2.X. Runs on IBM PC/XT/AT/Jr. or true compatibles. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-8 PC-CALC -- This is an electronic spreadsheet program like 1-2-3 or Multiplan. Features include: 26 columns and 255 lines, variable column width, hidden columns, linkage of one spreadsheet to another, and built-in financial formulas. If you are a PC-File user, PC-CALC can reach into your data base to extract data or add up numbers. This is probably the best Shareware calc program around. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 9 MAIL LIST 2 -- MAIL LIST 2 is a user friendly program that will do everything you would ever need to do with a list manager. Features include: create name and address files, add new names and addresses, sort files using name or zip code, display files, update files, print hard copy of files for labels or listings, and delete files. Function keys are used for all menu decisions. The program is self documenting. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 10 THE PAD (PAD.WKS) -- THE PAD is a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet. THE PAD sets up a business calendar, personal calendar, telephone numbers, notes on special projects, and business notes. Even if you don't use it as the author intended, it's fascinating to see how a menu-driven program can be put together using 1-2-3. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-11 TIME AND MONEY -- This is an outstanding home financial manager program. Create your home budget. Track your expenditures. Project your finances into the future. Use it to analyze financial decisions: buy a house versus rent or fix up the old car versus buying a new one. Many other features. Menu driven and a snap to use. Includes a manual on disk. A superb program. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-12 PERSONAL FINANCE MANAGER -- This is the 1985 release of this popular program (version 4.5). All functions are menu driven. On disk documentation is included, but it is so easy to operate the program that careful study of documentation is unnecessary. Functions include: accounting of all checks, investment and savings, budget reports, and tax reports. Professional quality throughout. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-13 PC-FILE Version 9.0 -- "PC-FILE is one of the classic user-supported programs." BYTE magazine. PC-FILE will handle all but the most sophisticated data base needs. Easy to use, and f-a-s-t! Version 9.0 handles up to 4,000 files in memory. This means sorting or accessing information is many times faster than programs which must constantly go to disk to get their information. Data can be imported and exported to other programs. Includes a report generator and many other goodies. In October 1985 readers of PC World voted PC-FILE as the second best data base program available at any price. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 67 EASYFILE -- EASYFILE is a medium strength database program. EASYFILE handles a maximum of 1,000 records per file, but you can have multiple files on the same disk. Commands include: Display, Add, Copy, Print, Erase, Status Report, Select new file, Change display to Color or Mono. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-14 NEWKEY -- NEWKEY is a Prokey-style program that allows you to redefine almost any key on your keyboard. Create your own macros that run with any program. Your definitions can be saved, merged, and loaded. NEWKEY is RAM resident, which means it's there to use no matter what program you are working with. Takes only 3.7 K of memory plus your definitions (up to 27 K). Commands and features are similar to Prokey. Customize your software so it runs the way you want it to! On-disk documentation and sample definitions. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 15 FILE CABINET/HOME INVENTORY -- FILE CABINET is a simple data base program written in basic. It's not as powerful as PC-FILE, but it's plenty good for home use. It does all the standard stuff: select data base, search, change data, enter records, delete records, report, sort, and print. Easy to use. HOME INVENTORY is another home oriented program. It allows you to create an inventory of what you have at home for insurance purposes. You enter a description of the item, how many, the replacement cost, and the location (choose from one of eight preset locations). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-16 PC-PICTURE GRAPHICS SYSTEM -- This is one dynamite graphics package! It can create absolutely professional graphics. Ten demo graphics are included to give you a feel for the range of possibilities. Simple to use. Menu driven and capable of sending pictures to plotters via a graph file or digitizing. NOTE:Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMS DISK DS-19 PC-DIAL -- Although its approach is simple and straightforward, its capabilities surpass those of some of the more expensive communications programs on the market today. Features include: speeds of up to 9600 baud, send and receive all types of files, uses modems which do or don't support auto-dial, automatic redialing, save a picture of your screen to disk, supports xmodem transmissions, automatic logon sequences of any length. Runs on the PC jr. too. Top rate. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-57 HOST III -- HOST III is a remarkably good bulletin board system. It requires a Hayes Smartmodem (or compatible) and at least 128K. This program is useful not only as a bulletin board, but any time you transfer files by modem. Regular communications programs require constant monitoring. HOST III automates everything. HOSTCALL allows both ends of the communications link to be automated. Features: transfer any type of file, supports XMODEM, password protection, automatic hangup, 9 commands for user at the other end, simple installation, and 19 pages of on-disk documentation. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - UTILITY PROGRAMS DISK 20 UTILITY DISK A -- CHECKOUT acts like a computer doctor. You can easily check out your parallel port(s), serial port(s), CRT display, or smart modem (impulse dial or touchtone dial). DISK DRIVE TESTER checks for disk drive functions like creating files, reading files, and read/write files. If you've ever had to copy or delete many programs at one time, you know using a wild card match can often be disastrous. GLOBAL COPY & DELETE is a nifty way to solve that problem. You move through the files and mark those which you want to copy or delete, then the program handles all the work at once. SUPERTYPER offers several improvements over the DOS type command. First, the display is paged, not scrolled. This makes it much easier to read. Second, previously displayed pages are saved and can be shown again using the PgUp and PgDn commands. Other benefits too. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 21 UTILITY DISK B -- BACKSCROLL! is a bi-directional scrolling utility. You can save an entire screen of information just by hitting control and return. Later you can go back and scroll this information up or down with just a few keystrokes. This program is especially useful with communications programs. It allows the user to review large amounts of data easily. Great fun to use. UNPROTECT (UN.P) will unprotect IBM's file protection method for basic programs. This program will not make backup copies of commercial software. DISK CLEANER (CLEAN.COM) is designed to work with a disk cleaning diskette. It runs your disk drive through a series of motions designed to ensure you get the most out of your cleaning diskette. HELPCOM is a BASIC program which provides an on screen reference/help screen for just about everything important about your computer: DOS commands, basic commands, edlin commands, word processing commands--it goes on and on. There are 16 screens in all. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 22 UTILITY DISK C -- SPEED 411 dramatically speeds up loading and saving data to your disk drive. Easy to install. FASTPRINT allows you to modify the "PrtSc" function so printing stops when you hit the "PrtSc" key a second time. A great time saver. If you ever leave your computer turned on when you're not around, you're risking phosphor burn. If something is displayed on the screen long enough, it can become permanently etched there. SCREEN SAVER turns off the screen display if no keys have been touched for three minutes. When you touch any key, the display returns. FILE LOCATOR (WHEREIS.COM) is a godsend if you've got a hard disk or if you use multiple directory paths. This program searches for the file you indicate through all DOS 2.0 directories and lists matching files with their directories and subdirectories. FINANCIAL PACKAGE is a menu-driven program which handles 20 financial calculations such as Loan Payment Schedules, Mortgage Amortization Table, Effective Interest Rates, Annual Depreciation Rate, etc. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 65 UTILITY DISK D -- BROWSE is a surprisingly useful utility program. BROWSE lets you load text files into memory and then view one full screen at a time. You use the arrow keys to scroll up, down, left, and right. Home takes you to the beginning. End goes to the end. Great for on-disk documentation. SUPER DIRECTORY version 2.4 is the latest, greatest version of a classic program. It's a directory command that allows you to sort files alphabetically, by extension, by size, or by date/time. It also shows hidden files, as well as the attributes of all files (hidden, system, read only, etc.). MOVE IT allows you to clean up your hard disk. If you have some programs under the wrong sub-directory MOVE IT can easily and quickly transfer the files to the right directory, then delete the old files automatically. Copies as many or as few programs as you wish. DOS 2.0 SPEED UP is a brief explanation of how to modify your DOS to speed up your disk drive operation while making it much quieter. Just enter 11 lines of commands and the change is made. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 66 UTILITY DISK E -- DISKETTE ORGANIZER (COVER) is a nifty little program that only does one thing, but does it very well. It sorts and formats directory information, then prints it out so it is just the right size to fit inside the diskette envelope. You'll have a handy hard copy of all the files on the disk, their size, free space, and the date. FILE COMMANDER (ALTER) allows you to change the attributes of your files at will. For example, you can hide any file. You can make a file "read only" so it can't be erased. Check your DOS 2.X manual for information on file attributes. DOS EDITOR (NDOSEDIT) changes the way the keypad keys are used in normal DOS operations. The new meanings are far more natural for the average user. For example: Pressing control and the left arrow takes you to the beginning of the previous word. Twenty commands. MEMORY allows dynamic setting and resetting of the amount of memory used by DOS. You can set your system switches for anything you want, then use MEMORY to tell DOS to use all your memory. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 23 COMMERCIAL UNPROTECT -- The descriptions on this disk tell you how to legally make backup copies of your own commercial software. Here are the programs you can archive: Lotus 123, Easywriter, Flight Simulator, Memory Shift, PFS:File, Visicalc, Word, and Zork. Also included is COPY, a program which will copy some other protected programs. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 24 UTIL 1.3/WASH/DISK UTILITIES -- UTIL 1.3 is a wonderful utility program that lets you do all sorts of things quickly and easily without having to use or remember DOS commands: sort a directory, browse a text file, redefine your keyboard, type directly to the printer, switch to color or monochrome screen. WASH allows you to handle many maintenance items without remembering complicated DOS commands. Includes these functions: view a file, print a file, copy file to another disk, rename file, delete file, backup file, and other features. DISK UTILITIES allows you to list all files (including hidden and erased files), hide normal files, and recover erased files. Menu-driven and self-documenting. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 25 RAMDISK/BOOTMEM -- If you have at least 256K of RAM, you can transform part of that memory into a RAM disk C with RAMDISK (FREE1), a disk drive emulator. Now you can access your program 50 to 100 times faster than you can with a regular disk drive. Not only that, but you avoid the wear and tear on your drives. With BOOTMEM (FREE3) you can reboot your computer without losing what you have stored in memory. This can be useful to anyone. It is especially useful when you are using RAMDISK. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-26 ULTRA UTILITIES -- "Some of the very handiest, most essential utilities that I have ever seen." R.B., Overland Park, Kansas. "Similar to the Norton Utilities." BYTE magazine. The ULTRA UTILITIES allow you to archive commercially protected disks. On disk documentation explains the use of tracks beyond the conventional 40 and describes some of the more common sectoring methods used to copy-protect commercial software. Fix damaged files and directories. Many more applications. NOTE: Double-sided disks will ONLY run on double-sided disk drives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 28 DISK CATALOG (DISKCAT)/AUTOFILE -- "This program sets a new tone for user friendliness and total diskette catalog control!" P.C., Sunnyvale, California. DISK CATALOG allows you to create and print a catalog of files contained on up to 50 diskettes. You can also enter a description of each file and organize them by preestablished categories. Entry of the information is a snap. Just insert each diskette when prompted. DISK CATALOG handles the rest. Then you can sort your files in any of several ways and print out a hard copy if you wish. AUTOFILE is an easy to use file management program. Use it to store inventory records, recipes, etc. Call up the information you need by searching for key words (up to 42 of them) or for any word you wish. Commands include: Add, Find, Edit, Return, Delete, Print, Next. Extensive use of function keys and the keypad. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 29 KEYBOARD UTILITIES -- IBM should have put some little LED lights on the "Caps Lock" and "Num Lock" keys to show when they are locked in. UPNUM is a utility that takes care of that problem. No matter what program you are running, UPNUM will display the status of the "Caps Lock" and "Num Lock" keys in the upper left hand corner of your screen. Handy. Saves much frustration. Have you ever "typed" a doc file to the screen and watched it scroll off into hyperspace? No more! SCROLLK makes the "Scroll Lock" key work the way it should. Press it once and it stops the screen from scrolling and the message "more" flashes in the bottom left hand corner. Press it again and the scroll continues. DDATE is a time saver for those of us who don't have a built in time and date clock. When you boot your PC this utility remembers what the date was the last time you used it. Hit return to accept that date or change the date, month, or year by using the arrow keys. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK DS-30 CHEAP ASSEMBLER (CHASM) -- CHASM is a fine 8086 assembler for the PC. Each machine code instruction for the PC's micro processor has a mnemonic. These mnemonics make it much easier to develop a program and then go back and convert them to numbers. CHASM can also convert basic programs to assembly language. A program written in assembly language runs up to 1,000 times faster than a similar one written in BASIC. CHASM produces directly executable code and does not require a linker. Plenty of on disk documentation. EXTENDED BATCH LANGUAGE (BAT) is a programming language which is used as a replacement for DOS batch commands. BAT allows you to easily do things that are impossible with normal batch files. With BAT you can: have better control of messages to the screen, accept input from the user, search for files, mix DOS and BAT commands,and much more. Use it to add an on-disk help file to any program. Create an easy to use interface between your computer and a barely computer literate user. You will be delighted! The program walks you through examples so you can see how each module works. Clever, fun, and informative. ARCHIE is a computer bug who will play games and songs for the young computer user. ARCHIE will also display tips on structured BASIC programming with helpful insight on subroutines and block structure of program logic. Menu driven. Terrific! Supports different key signatures, sharps, flats, etc. Just position the keyboard cursor and type in the note. Your tune may be played at any time. Save your compositions to disk. Easy to use. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISK 37 PC-MUSICIAN -- "This masterful work is quite an educational tool. My son was using the compose/playback mode within 5 minutes." D.S., Culver City, California. The 1985 version of this extremely popular program features a fully functioning music editor for moving measures around. Instant playback is available. Includes a comprehensive help screen. You can create songs, save them, make modifications, and play other songs already saved on disk. Enter music using standard musical notation either from sheet music or by composing your own. A good way to encourage touch typing practice. READING flashes a word on the screen for just a moment. You must then retype the word you saw. Helps students read quicker and learn to type correctly. MORSE CODE GENERATOR (MORSECODE) is great if you want to learn morse code. Create a file of the words you want translated into morse code. INVADERS is another classic arcade game. The invaders are marching closer and closer. Hide behind your bases and knock them off. Easy at first, but they move faster and faster until they're just a blur. You can move right, left, and up and down. JAMMER is the PC version of Head-On. FROG is a recreation of the classic arcade adventure. Try to get your frog across the busy freeway without getting run over. Then try to cross the swift stream without drowning. Keeps track of the top ten scores automatically. You can also adapt the program to be played with a joystick or the keyboard. PACGIRL is a Pacman variation. Can be played on any monitor. And the details (ah! the details) are handled so nicely it's a joy to play the game. Great sound effects abound. Graphically interesting. CASTLE is a first-rate graphics adventure program. You are trapped in a deserted Castle. The Castle is full of treasures. That's the good news. The bad news is that the Castle is full of monsters. And we're not talking about words on the screen. We're talking about things that chase you around the room. You'd better have a weapon and some armor if you plan to fight. Otherwise, get out fast! The cursor keypad moves your man. You also type in two word commands. You can pick up the items you need to collect the treasures, fight off the monsters, and find your way out of the Castle. High scores are saved on the wall in the courtyard. There are 83 rooms and 13 treasures.
